Mei Liafang (1894-1961) was a great Peking Opera artist in modern Chinese history. As a male actor who portrayed female characters, his exquisite performances were belauded by international audience while touring the world. In 1930, his visit to New York and several other cities in United States for 72 days was hailed as sensational. Ranked first in the Four Great Dan (female role) in the golden era of Peking Opera, Mei also played a significant role in cultural exchange, as he attached global attentions for the art of Peking Opera.
