Artist Bio
Charles Beck was born in 1923 and raised in Fergus Falls, MN. He graduated first from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN in 1948 with a degree in art, and then at the University of Iowa where he received his MFA in 1950. In 1953, Beck continued his study of art by travelling to and from the Twin Cities for a post-graduate study at the University of Minnesota where he was introduced to woodblock printing. He was influenced by the landscapes and scenery of Ottertail County in Fergus Falls and made it his predominate subject matter in his work. He taught for 27 years at Fergus Falls Community College (now M State). In 1980, Beck was granted an honorary doctorate by Concordia, and in 2006, M State named their newest gallery after him. Charles Beck died in September 2017 at the age of 94.
