Artist Bio
Born in Tarrytown, New York, Rockwell Kent was a painter, printmaker, illustration, and author. He was also a political activist.
Additional Information
In 1979, an appraiser from Sotheby Park Bernet identified four wood engravings by Rockwell Kent owned by the University, nut none of them were found when UND Art Collections launched a search for missing art in 2005. In 2014, two of the prints listed in the appraisal, including this one, were recovered (along with a third not on the 1979 list) after a retired professor found them as he unpacked boxes moved out of his office years earlier. Realizing they had been packed by mistake, the three prints by Kent were returned.
It is the only printmaking by Kent that was not on the University's 1979 Sotheby Park Barnet appraisal list. Therefore, prior to its return to UND, there was no awareness that the University owned it.
