Additional Information

One of the most celebrated artists of the nineteenth century,

Manet’s rejection of academic realism marked a pivotal point in the

development of Impressionism. In this engraving, Manet celebrates

another avant-garde artist of the era—the symbolist poet Charles

Baudelaire, whose intense, expressive investigations of contemporary life

broke from established tradition, much like Manet’s art.
