Artist Bio
Daniel Serra-Badué was born in Santiago de Cuba. He began learning art at the age of 10 at the Escuela Municipal de Bellas Artes in Santiago. At only 13, he traveled to New York to learn under José Simont. A year later, Serra-Badué was admitted to the Art Students League in New York, being the youngest ever to do so. In 1929, now 15, Daniel traveled to Spain to learn under Enrique Pascual in Barcelona, then returned to Cuba to finish his high school education the next year. Serra-Badué would go on to receive his Licentiate in Law from the University of Barcelona in 1936, his Doctor of Laws from the University of Havana in 1938, his MFA from the National School of Fine Arts in Havana in 1943, and his Doctor in Social, Political, and Economic Sciences from the University of Havana in 1949. Serra-Badué was heavily influenced by surrealism and showcased that theme throughout his paintings, drawings, and prints.
