Artist Statement:
Being from Alaska, the first thing that comes to mind when oil and water are mentioned is the Exxon Valdez oil spill. After the spill, my father worked a temp job filing and sorting paperwork that dealt with the spill. Throughout the day he would look at the photos of the oil that had killed the wildlife and had heavily polluted the water as well as glance at the paper work stating the horrible misconduct and negligence of the crew. It greatly affected our families view on the importance of natural resources and how we respected our environment. My favorite bird from Alaska is the Horned Puffin. A total of 162 Horned Puffins were collected dead after the oil spill. I chose to display the pattern of the oil that spread throughout the coast as well as a delicate white puffin skull overlaid onto the spill.
