Artist Statement:
For this exchange I chose to do awoodcut that focuses on the female forms interaction with water. The image expresses the role flooding plays in people's lives, how a flood 'blankets' itself around physica structures forcing them to accommodate and adapt to sudden natural phenomena. For most, the experience can be suffocating and daunting, but this relaxed pose exudes peacefulness when grappling iwth destructive forces. Those in this river valley have come to view flooding simply as a part of our lives.
I sued hand carved linear pattern to capture figural dimensionality and a cool four-colored scheme printed from three woodblocks to convey a sense of tranquility. The title "Snug as a Bug in a Flood" is based on an old saying but has been altered to promote questions regarding our level of comfort to flood related issues.
