Abstract
The study was undertaken to determine the potential of the listening process in music for use by the learner. It focused on the epistemological premises of the instructional mode, particularly with reference to the use of the creative process as a form of learning which is realized through Susanne Langer's emphasis on actualization. In the study, an examination was made of the nature of the relationships that exist between the subject (the learner) and the object (the music). Emphasis was given to those relationships which enable the learner in his or her use of a knowledge base to transcend it in order to achieve conceptual understanding through the use of effective methodology by the music educator.Listening is a process of learning which, because of the differences in valuing by individuals, is unique to each learner. The learner determines what is of value based upon his or her ability to find meaning in the relationship with the music. The actualization of meaning is dependent upon the learner's ability to design or structure experience. The designing of experience by the learner is facilitated by the music educator. The music educator uses the dialogue to determine the needs of the learner in the development of a meaningful listening process. The use of the dialogue enables the learner to confront music as an unknown, and it allows the learner to design the listening process in order to reveal the nature of the unknown. Determining the nature of the unknown means that the listening process has been actualized by the learner and has become structured into his or her experience.Chapter 2 is a review of the related literature. Chapter 3 investigates and analyzes the nature of the listening process. Chapter 4 discusses the role of the music educator in the development of the learner's listening process. Chapter 5 summarizes, draws conclusions, and makes recommendations for future studies.
