Abstract
The presentation of research in this dissertation is in two forms: a listing in appendix form and a critical commentary which comprises the text. The list is a glossary of all the Saints referred to in the Tales along with notes regarding their symbolic representation in Medieval artwork. The commentary includes: an introduction setting forth exegetical principles; separate chapters on the Reeve, Wyf, and Pardoner; a chapter which deals with saints in "The Friar's Tale," "The Summoner's Tale," and "The Canon's Yeoman's Tale"; and a conclusion. In essence, the aim of the research is to demonstrate a relationship between the life and symbolic representation of a saint and a corresponding reference or allusion in the Tales. The saints discussed are: Anne, Cuthbert, Dunstan, James, John the Apostle, John the Baptizer, Judoc (Joce), Mary, Oswald, Paul, Peter, Ronyan, Thomas, and Veronica.
