Abstract
The surviving literary works of Mikhail Mikhailovich Dostoevskii (1820-1864), brother of the more famous Fedor M. Dostoevskii, were last published in the original Russian in a two-volume set in Petrograd in 1915. Neither volume has ever been available to readers in a published English translation. The first volume of this set contains a short biographical sketch of Mikhail, as well as several pages about him written by Fedor following Mikhail's death; these sections are followed by three works by Mikhail: two novellas entitled "Little Daughter" and "Mr. Svetelkin," and one short story entitled "The Sparrow." This dissertation is an English translation of the introductory materials and the first work, "Little Daughter."In translating this material use was made of available reference works; these are listed in the "Translator's Introduction." The translation itself is an effort to render the original Russian into 20th-century American English, making use of colloquial speech in dialogues wherever appropriate. A number of annotations are also included to explain words or expressions in the translations perhaps unfamiliar to American readers. These notes are indicated in the translated text by superscripted numbers, and the corresponding notes appear in a section titled "Notes" following the translation.
