Abstract

Physical activity (PA) decreases the risk of age-associated illness and functional impairments; however, older adults engage in PA at a lower rate than any other age group (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006). The purpose of this study is to determine how PA becomes sustainable in older adults over the age of 65 in order to guide effective wellness programming. This Will help older adults age in place rather than having to move into institutions due to illness or functional impairments. This is a phenomenological study that includes interviews and observations of 15 community dwelling older adults. In the findings, sustainability is related to multiple constructs as reflected in the themes. In the first theme, participants highlighted a tendency toward lifespan continuity in PA with a gradual decline in intensity. Sustainment of participation in PA is supported by multiple factors in the second theme. These factors included ability to adapt to limitations, independence and control with PA, personable and skillful leadership, ability to utilize own learning style, match between ability and challenge, enjoyment, and individual motivational factors. In the third theme, participants projected interpersonal and intrapersonal differences in their perceptions about PA. In the fourth theme, they offered recommendations for PA programming for older adults. Because of the unique conditions, situations, and preferences noted with all participants, it is recommended that wellness program developers who promote PA in older adults should offer enjoyable and educational PA, while also addressing unique, age-associated concerns and learning styles. PA program components should include medical doctor referrals, individual evaluation, orientation, and intervention; peer partnerships; community partnerships; and community events. These programs should be offered in community locations such as housing complexes, homes, fitness centers, and senior centers. With these recommendations, it is my vision to promote mobility and wellness among older adults as we help them age in place successfully and experience quality of life during their golden years.
