Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the Benedictine values of respect, hospitality, community, service, prayer, and moderation as stated in the Mission Statement of the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota, have been implemented over the past 40 years in student life, curriculum, and instruction. Historiographic research methods were used to identify trends that have existed over a period of time. Data were collected and analyzed for themes and commonalties. Results were discussed in relation to the review of literature. Recommendations were provided based on the results of the study. Five themes were identified that all pertained to the Benedictine values addressed in the Mission Statement; a sixth theme emerged related to risk-taking. Finally, the following six patterns or themes were developed: (1) The most prominent values incorporated at the University of Mary are community, service, and hospitality. (2) Less emphasis has been placed on the value of prayer in comparison to the other five values. (3) Moderation has been the most difficult value to implement at the University of Mary. (4) Respect for persons and environment is present among student life, curriculum, and instruction. (5) The Sisters of Annunciation Monastery play a vital role in sustaining the Benedictine values and Catholic identity. (6) The value of risk-taking has been critical to the success of the University of Mary. This study reinforced the concept that values can be implemented in institutions of higher education. While most of the Benedictine values were found in the curriculum, in student life, and in instruction at the University of Mary, there may be competitive values from society at large. In order to maintain its Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine identity, the University of Mary will need to look more closely at this dynamic.
