Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine issues related to the level of satisfaction with selected aspects of the transfer process of the students who had transferred to the University of North Dakota (UND). Research questions addressed several issues including the difficulty experienced in transferring to UND in regard to admission, advisement, and/or acceptance of transfer credit; the respondents' perceptions of the accuracy and understandability of information provided by UND; the ways in which students were satisfied or dissatisfied with the transfer admission process; and the respondents' suggestions for improvements to the transfer admission process.Data were gathered using a survey form administered to 200 of the 741 students who transferred to UND for the fall semester of 1996. Frequencies and percentages were used to analyze demographic variables. A mean score was used in addition to frequency and percentages to compare the degree of respondent satisfaction with various elements of the transfer process.Three-fourths of the respondents found the transfer process satisfactory while others found problems with admission, advisement, and/or the transfer of credits. Ninety-five percent of the respondents reported having received information from UND. Of those who did receive information, 85% reported the information to have been accurate and 88% considered it to have been understandable. The friendliness and helpfulness of University personnel was the main reason cited for respondents' satisfaction. Transfer of credit from their previous institutions was the main source of dissatisfaction among the respondents, The most frequently suggested changes were to the advisement process. This study may provide useful information to improve the transfer admission process. This may then increase the number of students transferring to the institution.
