Abstract

A single case study was designed to explore the effects that two pelvic positions and the use of a keyguard have on a physically handicapped child's speed and accuracy in typing. The subject, an 8-year-old male with cerebral palsy, was positioned in four combinations of keyguard versus non-keyguard use and neutral versus posterior pelvic positions during eight typing sessions over a time period of one month. A two way analysis of variance by regression using a linear model was performed on speed and accuracy. The results indicated that the use of the keyguard increased accuracy (p < .01) and decreased speed (p < .01). Pelvic positioning did not appear to have a major effect on either speed or accuracy. Informal observations indicated that typing alone did not have a significant effect on spelling skills. Recommendations for further studies are addressed.
