Abstract
The major purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of satisfaction with training as reported by foster care providers in North Dakota. A secondary purpose of this exploratory study was having foster providers identify their foster child care responsibilities and major benefits of training.
Providers of each of the two major types of foster care in North Dakota, general foster care and therapeutic foster care, evaluated training received. This was done separately due to the different training objectives and procedures of each. Half of the 884 foster care households in North Dakota were randomly included in this study. All 73 of the therapeutic foster care providers were included.
Surveys designed specifically for this study were mailed to each of the households. The surveys required that foster fathers and foster mothers each complete their own sections. Various demographic data was collected. A combination of statements addressing training received, evaluated using a five-point Likert scale, and open-ended questions were used to gather specific study data.
Findings indicated that both foster and therapeutic foster care providers are generally satisfied with the training they've received. All composite evaluations were positive, with therapeutic providers evaluation of specific curriculum items slightly findings indicated that both foster and therapeutic foster care providers are generally satisfied with the training they've received. All composite evaluations were positive, with therapeutic providers evaluation of specific curriculum items slightly.
Results of this study may be used to adapt the current training curriculum to better meet the training needs of foster care providers in North Dakota. This study was sponsored and financially supported by the Children and Family Services Training Center. This organization provides much of the training, either directly or indirectly, for foster parents in North Dakota.
