Abstract

The purpose of this research was to identify special education teachers' perceptions of their principals' support in a rural district. The research examined the principal as a supporter, a believer in special education programming, and an advocate for special education teachers and students. The study is guided by the following research questions:

What do Fargo special education teachers perceive their building-level principal. ..

  1. Believes about special education? This construct resulted in the highest score of the four constructs with a mean score of 5.2.

  2. Understands about special education? The three questions in this construct indicated a mean score of 4.9

  3. Provides them with regards to special education programming? Results of the survey were tabulated to depict a mean score of 5.0.

  4. Demonstrates when dealing with special education students? A mean score of 5 .2 was represented for the three questions focused on this construct.

Fargo Public Schools 140 special education teachers were surveyed using an online tool which resulted in responses from 104 special education teachers which provided a response rate of 74%. Based on the responses from those 104 results, special education teachers agree the principal with whom they work Believes, Understands, Provides, and Demonstrates appropriately to create an environment and culture which fosters student success and teacher job satisfaction
