Abstract
The purpose of the research was to determine the extent of adoption of non-silver based systems in weekly newspapers.
The following objectives were outlined:
-
To determine the status of image output in weekly newspapers
-
To determine advantages and disadvantages of non-silver based, low-end laser output as experienced by current users
-
To establish data pertaining to savings in materials experienced by newspapers after implementing low-end laser imaging systems
-
To establish data pertaining to capital investment incurred with various generation systems.
A two part. survey instrument was developed and utilized as a data gathering device. Low-end laser output users were identified in part one of the survey and sent part two of the instrument.
Based on the results of the study, the following conclusions were drawn
-
one-hundred percent of the laser user respondents indicated they were satisfied and recommended that other newspapers should implement laser printers as typesetters
-
The two predominant disadvantages identified were loss of quality and training period needed to implement a laser system
-
Cost savings (materials, time, and labor) was indicated as the most important advantage
-
The average cost savings experienced was 48.8%
-
The average cost for a laser system was $15,547
-
Approximately 69% of non-laser users intended to implement a laser system
-
More than 58% of non-laser users had computers which could be used as input devices for a laser system
Recommendations for further research based on the results of the research were:
-
As the research was limited to only North Dakota weekly newspapers a similar study could be conducted to determine regional and/or national utilization
-
A similar study be conducted to establish the extent of low-end non-silver based output in daily newspapers at the state, regional , or national level
-
The study be repeated periodically to determine future trends in newspaper image production
