Abstract

This study was designed to suggest ways to help create healthier player-coach relationships in collegiate sports by collecting data from student-athletes in the NCAA transfer portal. The student-athletes who were selected to participate have successfully transferred through the 2021-2022 Men's ice hockey transfer portal, which allows players to move to a new school and hockey program once in their NCAA careers. The study seeks to highlight the reasons student-athletes enter and eventually decide to transfer. Through the fundamental procedural leadership approach in Artifact Three, the findings will point to a healthier player-coaching relationship in collegiate environments by seeking to understand each individual's preferred goals, values, and leadership styles. The Transfer Athlete Portal Pathways support program also suggests initiatives to create a healthier environment for all student-athletes who may need support from players who have already successfully transferred. I also determine foundational themes from participants' feedback crucial for comprehending and establishing supportive, communicative, and healthier environments in collegiate sports. The findings offer actionable insights for coaches, athletics directors, and student-athletes within the sporting environment and encourage further research in this vital area of collegiate athletics.
