Abstract
This literature review was carried out based on a successful completion of an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and oral defense. A case report was analyzed and the topic duration of treatment of osteoporosis in women with bisphosphonates was formulated. The literature review was done using databases as CINAHL. PubMed and Cochrane. Keywords used included "duration of treatment of osteoporosis with bisphosphonates". publication dates between 2009 to 2015 and limits to only females were added. Recommendations from the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), the International Osteoporosis Foundation (!OF). North American Menopausal Society (NAMS) Unites States Preventive Service Task Force (USPSTF) were also reviews
The literature in these articles and guidelines was consistent with the treatment modalities or osteoporosis but there was a proposal for further research on duration of treatment of osteoporosis in women especially with bisphosphonates. While the AACE guidelines looks at the duration of treatment for single medications in this class, the NOF recommends the health care provider must be knowledgeable about the drug efficacy vvith side effects against drug therapy. balancing the benefits against the risks
