Abstract
Nurse education curricula at the University of North Dakota (UND) College of Nursing include select medical and science-focused courses currently scheduled on campus employing traditional face-to-face teaching methods and have the potential for online translation, but contain segments that are difficult to translate in an online educational environment without additional technology. This qualitative, single-case study introduced and explored with UND nurse educator participants an educational model that maximized the attributes of asynchronous on-demand learning and synchronous live learning (bichronous learning) paired with an affordable 360-degree video digital technology camera. Two main research questions examined the 1) types of on-campus classes evaluated in the College of Nursing curricula suitable for translation online using 360-degree video, and 2) the perceptions and experiences of nurse educators teaching in this space about their knowledge and use of commercial learning software, 360-degree video, or internal institutional options. With a focus on translation of complex courses for the online learning environment assisted by digital technology, the study aimed to identify specific courses for application and explore perceptions and experiences of nurse educators teaching medical or science-focused courses with technology. Findings displayed the importance of technology, research, and innovation in Nursing education; the in-depth knowledge and high proficiency of nurse educators using software and systems with invested focus on student engagement; added to online class delivery methodologies with a cost-conscious technology option, and resulted in a qualitative research-based white paper developed for consideration by the College of Nursing. Keywords: Nursing education, medical education, teaching methods, online education environment, learner engagement, bichronous learning, 360-degree video learning, technology uses in education.
