Abstract

My thesis consists of a series of sketches. Each is on fishing. Emphasis is placed primarily on style, in which I experiment with language through imagery, through modulation of rhythm and shifting scale of perspective. Given these three elements, the substance of the sketches lies heavily on each one's philosophical as well as moral import (as demonstrated by the actions and thoughts of the characters themselves) along with the execution of stylistic devices relevant to each sketch. Finally, the sketches are written in reference to other nature writers, from Walton to Hemingway (along with Turgenev, Thoreau and McGuane), in which I explore the idea that the exterior world serves to represent an interior state of mind
