Abstract
It is the intention of this paper to trace Polish culture from its early roots in Inda-European culture, through the Early Slavic Period and the Polish state to the period of Polish emigration. The paper will follow the Polish immigrants to North Dakota and focus on the history of the primary Polish settlement in North Dakota, the community of Warsaw. Finally, there will be a history and description of the St. Stanislaus Church, Warsaw, the center of Polish culture.
The methods employed in this thesis include a study of early Slavic and Polish history, attendance at St. Stanislaus Church for mass, attendance at a Polish National Alliance meeting, interviews with members of the Warsaw parish including the resident priest, Fr. Stanley Duda, and several prominent citizens (Walter Gerszewski, Steve Mozinski, Frank Stoltman, Victor Stoltman, Ed Gudajtes, and Joe Osowski). A survey was made of area cemeteries, phone books and county atlases to catalogue names of Polish lineage and is included as an appendix.
