Abstract

This study assesses loneliness rates among undergraduates from fall 2008 to spring 2019 through a secondary analysis of the National College Health Assessment II (NCHA II). The NCHA II, a comprehensive and nationally representative survey, covers a wide range of mental and physical health issues among U.S. college students. The survey consisted of questions which had students self-identify if they have felt very lonely within the last 2 weeks, 30 days, and 12 months. The study revealed that 54.90% to 67.40% of undergraduate students reported feeling very lonely during these survey periods. The results showed that most undergraduates experienced loneliness, and undergraduate loneliness rates are on the rise.
