Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of this scholarly project was to promote access to leisure opportunities for people with disabilities in rural areas. The author addressed unmet needs among this population considering personal, occupational, environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic factors. The goal was to develop a product that provided opportunities regardless of abilities to promote leisure exploration and participation, social engagement, and life skill development for people with disabilities

Methods. The author conducted a needs assessment through a literature review following the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO), collaborations with site staff, and an on-site observation and environmental analysis. Data was examined to identify key supports and barriers. Findings informed the development of an OT-based product.

Product. The product was a spring day camp planned by the student in collaboration with adults with disabilities. The camp included a variety of graded activities such as dancing, gardening, baking, nature exploration, and more. It also included supporting implementation materials, including a volunteer and staff support guide, a website, a refined participant intake form, and an evaluation survey.

Summary. The author created a spring day camp to promote leisure access for people with disabilities in rural areas. This product showcases occupational therapy’s value in inclusive program development, environmental adaptation, and addressing community service gaps. It is anticipated that the product will increase opportunities for meaningful participation, support community awareness of inclusive leisure, and provide a sustainable model for accessible, co-led programming.
