Abstract
Background: Disruptive sleep patterns in patients with mental health disorders are a common occurrence. Unfortunately, many people are often treated for their mental health disorders solely or prescribed more medications to manage sleep, leaving sleep evaluation, and management addressed inadequately in the clinical setting. There is extensive evidence supporting the benefits of integrating mobile applications into clinical practice.
Objective: The purpose of the clinical project was to determine if an educational intervention would increase APRN’s knowledge about the mobile app in the care of mental health patients who experience disruptive sleep patterns in primary care outpatient clinics
Methodology: A one-group pre and post-test design were used to investigate whether the mobile application education intervention will increase the providers’ knowledge in 8 weeks. The participants were outpatient primary care providers. Through zoom, a pretest was given, then an education intervention and a similar post-test survey were presented at the end. The one group design was chosen for this DNP project due to the small size of the clinic and the number of clinic participants.
Result: Responses to all ten statements showed a statistically significant difference of post-intervention means over pre-intervention means. The statistical comparison between pre-and post-test results was all statistically significant, demonstrating its utility in improving outcomes for patients.
Conclusion: Although the project obtained only twelve participants and was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in limited patient appointments and the clinic having to be closed for two weeks, the project’s results showcased a substantial method in improving patient care. Provider education on evaluation and use of mobile apps will increase their knowledge and recommend the relaxation promoting mobile application to manage disruptive sleep patterns in mental health patients. Further clinical studies in this area are needed.
