Abstract

University of North Dakota students Jenna Larson and Chelsie Johnson have earned recognition and scholarships for their academic endeavors in the communication program.

Larson, a senior from Alexandria, Minn., is the summer recipient of a Washington Media Fellows Scholarship.

The Media Fellows Program, the Washington Media Scholars Foundation recognizes enthusiastic and qualified students by awarding several scholarships each academic year. In the 2014-15 academic year, the foundation will distribute more than $40,000 in total scholarship awards.

In addition to this honor, Larson was a 2014 finalist for the Vance and Betty Lee Stickell Student Internship, a program that places talented advertising students with Fortune 500 companies for experiential learning opportunities.

During the summer, Larson held an internship at SimmonsFlint, a marketing/advertising agency in Grand Forks. She currently serves as a student marketing assistant with the Office of Marketing and Communication at UND.

Johnson, a senior from Thompson, N.D., is the recipient of a $500 award given by the Robert and Mary Furst Scholarship in the Humanities.

This scholarship is presented to a liberal arts student who maintains "North Dakota values and plans to teach or stay in the state."

Johnson currently interns at the UND Alumni Association & Foundation, assisting with events and public relations activities. She is also a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, where she was vice president of event planning.

In total, $23,000 worth of scholarships were awarded to UND communication majors this past spring.
