Abstract

The University of North Dakota invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

The University of North Dakota seeks a dynamic and visionary leader who will build upon the Collegeʼs strengths while exploring new and innovative opportunities. The successful applicant will provide exceptional undergraduate and graduate educational experiences; recruit and develop outstanding faculty; build partnerships with a variety of constituents; enhance the academic and cultural experience at UND and for the state; engage in fundraising and alumni relations; and promote faculty-driven scholarly and creative endeavors.

The Dean will be a committed team player who is devoted to excellence and shared governance. The selected individual will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and administrators. The Dean will have unquestioned integrity, exemplary interpersonal and communication skills, a commitment to diversity, common sense, and sound judgment. He or she must hold a terminal degree, with scholarly or creative accomplishments commensurate with the rank of full professor in his or her home tenure department within the college.

The College of Arts and Sciences plays a vital role in the universityʼs mission of student learning with a core foundation in the liberal arts. The Dean will report directly to the Provost and will be the academic leader of the largest and oldest of UNDʼs nine colleges. The College has over 200 regular faculty members in eighteen departments offering a choice of thirty-two undergraduate majors, fifteen master's programs, and ten doctoral programs.

The University of North Dakota, one of the nationʼs premier regional public Carnegie research universities, is at an exciting crossroads in its 129-year history. Major growth and positive change are the hallmarks of this new era – research funding has expanded and is now more than $100 million annually; enrollment has increased to over 15,000 students; and a $300 million capital campaign is well on its way to successful conclusion. In addition, the University has recently put into place an award-winning Essential Studies program, and has developed an innovative initiative, “Strategic Priorities for an Exceptional UND.”
