Hjelle served as State Highway Commissioner from 1961 until 1981, while Kefauver represented Tennessee in the U.S. House from 1939 until 1949 and the U.S. Senate from 1949 until 1963. Vendsel was an unsuccessful candidate for the U.S. House in 1954 and the U.S. Senate in 1958.
