An alumni of UND, Thomas Whelan served in the North Dakota State Senate from 1932 until 1940 and as the United States Ambassador to Nicaragua from 1951 until 1961.

Anastasio Somoza García was the President of Nicaragua from 1937 until his assassination in 1956.
