Formal photograph of North Dakota Lieutenant Governor Ruth Meiers, taken in April 1985. Meiers was a Democrat and served in the State House of Representatives from 1975 until 1984. She became the first female North Dakota Lieutenant Governor in 1985, alongside Governor George Sinner. She died in office in 1987, following a six month battle with lung and brain cancer.
