North Dakota House Majority Leader Earl Strinden (left) and Minority Leader Richard Backes (right) address an unidentified audience in 1977.

A Republican, Earl Strinden represented Grand Forks in the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1967 until 1989. He also served for many years as President of the UND Alumni Association and Foundation.

Democrat-NPLer Richard Backes represented Glenburn in the North Dakota House from 1961 until 1985. He also acted as North Dakota's Highway Commissioner and was a member of the North Dakota Water Commission.
