Artist Bio
Marlena Myles is a self-taught digital artist and enrolled member of the Spirit Lake Dakota Tribe, also of Mohegan and Muscogee descent, based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Working across digital illustration, animation, murals, public art, augmented reality, fashion and textile design, and book illustration, Myles uses contemporary technologies to bring Indigenous history, language, oral traditions, and relationships with the land into the present. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minnesota Museum of American Art, The Museum of Russian Art, and Red Cloud Heritage Center. Her public projects include several permanent augmented-reality installations that use place-based storytelling to connect visitors with Dakota history, culture, and understandings of the natural world. In 2022, Myles created Google’s Native American Heritage Month Doodle celebrating Indigenous North American stickball, and in 2023 she received a Knight Arts + Tech Fellowship. She is also the founder of Wíyouŋkihipi (We Are Capable) Productions, a Dakota publishing company dedicated to supporting and sharing Dakota culture, language, and history.
