Artist Bio

Jim Yellow Hawk:

Jim Yellowhawk grew up on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota. He is an enrolled member of the Itazipco Band of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and of the Onondaga/Iroquois on his mother’s side. Yellowhawk graduated from Marion College, Indiana, with a Bachelor of Science in Art and studied at Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio. He currently lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

His work often depicts a contemporary take on traditional ledger art.

Ray "Rock Boy" Janis:

Ray Rock Boy is an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Rockboy is from South Dakota. He earned his Associate’s degree in Graphic Design from Oglala Lakota College. Rock Boy's artwork is influenced by his Lakota culture and the pop art movement.

A large, contemporary piece of ledger art featuring a warrior figure riding a horse, a figure dancing, a large fist grabbing an orange circle, on the right side there are lines of orange circles in lines of four. There is a large and smaller black hand print across the orange circles. The number four is features repeatedly across the piece. The words "TUNKA OYATE" are on the right side below the handprints.
