Additional Information

From Text Panel:

Aphelion was inspired by the artist's reflection on the injustice suffered by people everywhere-especially women and children- as a result of war. The term "aphelion" refers to the point at which a planet is furthest from the star that gives it light. As Welker describes, this work honors those who have "witnessed death and torture all around them, under the indescribably exquisite and lonely galaxy that covers us all."

Fragments of poetry are hand-stitched on shimmering, star-like forms hovering over an inky midnight sky. While much of the poetry conveys sorrow and loss, some speaks of love and comfort, holding out hope for an orbit returning closer to the sun.
