Artist Bio
Ben Shahn (1898-1969) was born in Lithuania and, with his family, immigrated to the United States in 1906. He was renowned from the 1930s onward for his representational paintings that focused attention on what he viewed as social wrongs, such as the plight of coal miners, the underprivileged in the cities, victims of political injustice, etc. The portrait of Andrew Goodman is from a set of 3 prints at UND related to the villainous and well-known murders of three civil rights workers in Mississippi, committed in 1964 by the Ku Klux Klan.
