In keeping with the Impressionist’s interest in scenes of everyday life,

Toulouse-Lautrec’s print depicts a famous French politician, Georges

Clemenceau, not in a moment of great national importance, but being

fitted for new glasses by his optometrist. This lithograph reflects the

bold graphic style that made Toulouse-Lautrec famous. In addition to

his work as a painter and printmaker, the artist specialized in designing

advertising posters for Parisian nightclubs.
