Born in Arkansas, and moving to California as a teenager, Boyd attended the California State University of Long Beach, where he later taught printmaking part-time before studying at the Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Boyd taught Printmaking and Drawing at Wichita State University from 1972 until his retirement 36 years later.
