Artist Bio
Pieter Bruegel was born in what is now known as the Netherlands. He trained under other artists in his youth until 1551, when he joined the Antwerp painters’ guild. From there, he traveled through Italy to get inspiration and more training. He returned to Antwerp in 1555 to work as a printmaker. He painted in his own time, but his works did not become widely known or regarded until the next decade. He eventually married in 1563 and moved to Brussels, where he died only 6 years later. Despite his short life, Bruegel is regarded as the most significant artist of Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting and is known for painting landscapes and scenes of peasants. He is even sometimes referred to as “Peasant Bruegel” because many of his descendants also became famous artists.
