Artist Bio
Benjamin West Kilburn was born on December 10, 1827. He was known for his photography and stereoscopic views of the emerging American and Canadian states and provinces, national parks, and visual records of the great migration at the end of the 19th century. As a pioneer in photojournalism, he documented the Inauguration of Grover Cleveland, the Johnstown Flood in Pennsylvania, the Boxer Rebellion, the Boer War, the Spanish-American War, and many others.
Benjamin Kilburn is credited with the Gun-Style camera's invention, which was created to circumvent the usage of a tripod while taking pictures in the White Mountains, New Hampshire. The Gun-Style camera was manufacture by Scoville Mfg. Co. from 1882-1886.
Kilburn Co. was a family-run business selling and manufacturing stereoscopic slides and photographs by Benjamin and his brother Edward, dating back to 1865, although stereographs (stereo photographs) published before 1876 are solely credited to Benjamin. Kilburn Co. became the world's most extensive manufacturer of stereoscopic views from 1865 to 1910.
