Artist Bio

Charles Bierstadt did not receive formal art training but was instead self-taught. Born in Solingen, Prussia, and later moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, with his family when he was 12, Bierstadt took an interest in photography and began teaching himself at the age of 15. It was not until 1856 that Bierstadt and his brother began a business as photographers. Their success encouraged them to move their business to Niagara Falls, New York, where he found even more success. In his later years, Bierstadt traveled the world as a well-known photographer. He was regarded as an expert in stereoscopic views.
