Artist Bio
Hubert Robert was a French painter born in 1733 in Paris. In 1754 Robert studied at the French Academy in Rome where he was exposed to a a wide variety of Roman architecture and landscapes. He is best known for his depictions of crumbling and romanticized Roman ruins and architecture, which gained him the nickname "Robert des Ruines". Works by Hubert Robert can be found in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rijksmuseum, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and several others internationally.
