  Lydia O. Jackson and American Poetry League

  A selection of pages from the Fall 1973 issue of the American Poetry League Bulletin. Included is the bulletin cover, title page, Lydia O. Jackson’s poem, “Books,” and an anonymous article, “A Brief History of the American Poetry League from 1922 to 1964.” The American Poetry League (APL) was first founded in 1922 as the Midwest Poetry League. Jackson was a member of the APL and frequently published poems in the Bulletin. Her collection includes dozens of issues of the Bulletin, as well as related organizational materials. Her poem, “Books,” expresses her love of books and reading.

  Event Program for Venison Dinner Honoring Governor and Mrs. Fred G. Aandahl, 1947

  Republican Organizing Committee

  A program, with handmade cover, for a dinner event honoring North Dakota Governor Fred G. Aandahl and his wife, Luella Aandhal nee Brekke. The event was sponsored by the Republican Organizing Committee (ROC) of Grand Forks, Pembina, and Walsh Counties. Aandhal was a founder of the ROC, a conservative faction within the North Dakota Republican Party. He served as governor 1945-1951. The evening included the reading of a poem which Lydia O. Jackson wrote in Aandahl’s honor; it is printed in full on the back of the program. The poem speaks to Aandahl’s agricultural background and public image as a “dirt farmer” with a college education. Jackson wrote poems in honor of several public figures, including North Dakota Governor John E. Davis.
