    Description

    A photograph of a citation issued by Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, to the First Marine Division, Reinforced, for "outstanding gallantry and determination" in the Solomon Islands in 1942. The 164th Infantry Regiment landed on Guadalcanal on October 13, 1942, becoming the first Army regiment to take offensive action in the Pacific Theater. In doing so, they assisted the Marines in forcing the Japanese to withdraw.
