Description
This black-and-white aerial photograph, taken in 1939, shows a mostly residential scene in Grand Forks. In the lower-center portion of the image, the prominent architecture of St. Mary's Catholic Church stands out with its tall, sharply pointed steeple facing toward the lower-right. Directly in front of the church's entrance sits a triangular block and in this block sits the Civil War Memorial Monument to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).
The surrounding landscape transitions into a grid of residential streets lined with houses. Moving toward the upper left, the residential grid gives way to a wide, curving band of the Red River, lined with trees along its banks. Along the top center of the image a bridge spans across the Red Lake River.
