Description
"On February 21, 1897, fire destroyed Grand Forks's first large brick business building, the Syndicate Block. Built by Alexander Griggs and William Budge in 1883, the building was a total loss, estimated at $250,000. Firemen rescued several people who lived on the top floor. Ironically, one of those who were saved perished in the Hotel Dacotah fire in December of that same year." (from Grand Forks: A Pictorial History page 50)
Some of the businesses affected by the fire were the Ephraim Brothers Clothing Store, Higham Brothers Hardware Company, and the Rand Brothers Boots, Shoes and Rubbers. One business attached to the same building as the ones on fire appears not have been affect was the Cherniss & Sherman New and Second Hand Furniture store.
