Abstract

Hultberg Lectureship Series Highlights Opportunities

By Craig A. Garaas-Johnson

The story of the immigrant experience is often themed with obstacles overcome, ambitions for a new life, new opportunities for oneself and one’s family. These stories of hope and strength are so common in North Dakota that we often forget how unique they really are.

One such story is that of Hans Hultberg, born and raised in Sweden, who immigrated to the United States in 1879 at the age of 27. He and his wife, Susanna, were married in 1904 and settled in Washburn, North Dakota. They raised four children, Clara, Hilda, Agnes, and Walfred.

Hans and Susanna stressed the importance of education and all their children attended the University of North Dakota. Clara earned a degree from the College of Business and Public Administration in 1928 and Hilda earned a degree in education in 1929.

The importance of education was never lost on Clara, who in 1987 established the Hultberg Lectureship Series. An annual event, the series brings prominent alumnae to campus to share their experiences with panel discussions, class visits and luncheons with students and faculty.

The theme of this year’s lectureship series is “Creating Your Own Opportunities.” As students leave the abstract world of the classroom and begin their careers, learning to network and getting a preview of the business community from someone who has successfully navigated the terrain can be inspiring.

According to Laura Dvorak-Berry, Director of External Relations, “one of the most exciting things is to see what people have done after UND. It’s exciting to see alumni that they were here doing the same thing [many students are] doing and now look where they are.”

Celebrating its 24th year, the Hultberg Lectureship Series was established in 1987 by Clara E. Hultberg in memory of her parents Hans and Suzanne Hultberg. The purpose of the series is aligned with Clara’s interests in stimulating challenges and opportunities for students in business.

“Creating Your Own Opportunities,” from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, in the Memorial Union Ballroom.
