Abstract

New printing kiosks provide expanded service to students

The University of North Dakota is taking advantage of trends in modern technology to save money and space on campus and provide a service to students at the same time.

Since fall of 2011, "uPrint" printing kiosks have been placed on campus, allowing students to send documents from their personal computer or devices to the conveniently located campus kiosk where they can pick up printed copies. They are able to print on the spot and pay or it through their semester Student Technology Fee allocation, which is preloaded on the students' uPrint account. Black and white copies, all page sizes, cost 4 cents per page, while color copies, all pages sizes, cost 25 cents per page.

Print jobs are held in the system for two hours before they are deleted. Also, keeping in line with UND's "Power of Green" environmental sustainability efforts, most kiosk printers support two-sided printing.

"We are trying to provide more services for students away from building new computer labs. Everyone is bringing their own computers and equipment, so this was a way to bring a printing service without having to bring in more equipment," said Joshua Jones, associate director at the Center for Instructional and Learning Technologies.

The 12 printing kiosks available on campus are intended to give student more flexibility and greater access to printing services. The ATM style of these new kiosks makes them available to students around the clock, providing touch-screen access and a phone connected directly to tech support.

"We are providing these services to the students which are available 24 hours a day," Jones said. "They are in strategic locations so that students can print from their residence hall or home and stop by any one of the kiosks, print their papers, and get to class."
