Abstract
City of Grand Forks, UND form the Community and Campus Committee on High-Risk Alcohol Use
The City of Grand Forks and the University of North Dakota launched a campaign to address problems associated with high-risk alcohol use in the city at a joint news conference today at the Alerus Center.
Grand Forks Mayor Michael Brown and UND President Robert O. Kelley announced the formation of a new panel, The Community and Campus Committee on High-Risk Alcohol Use, which will work to establish a community and campus culture that supports responsible, low risk drinking.
The Committee is an extension of efforts first brought forth by the Service/Safety Committee of the Grand Forks City Council, chaired by Council member Terry Bjerke.
"Alcohol abuse is one of the greatest threats to the education of our young people and the vitality of our community today," said Mayor Brown. "In Grand Forks, we've had months of thoughtful public discussion, a review of our environment and an examination of best practices on this topic. Now it's time to develop strategies and tangible actions for the health and wellness of all of our community members when it comes to promoting the responsible use of alcohol."
The committee will be co-chaired by Lori Reesor, UND Vice President for Student Affairs, and Ken Vein, Grand Forks City Council. It will include representatives from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, Grand Forks hospitality industry, Public Health, Public Schools, Northeast Human Services, Grand Forks Air Force Base, Grand Forks Police, and UND Police, faculty, staff and students.
"The creation of this committee shows that the University and City are committed to working together to address the very real problems associated with high-risk alcohol use on our campus and in the community," said President Kelley. "The committee comprises partners -- from across the area -- with a vision to create a community and campus culture that supports responsible, low-risk alcohol use."
The first full committee meeting will take place on Aug. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m., in the Altru Health System Board Room.
The following is a list of The Community and Campus Committee on High-Risk Alcohol Use members:
