Abstract

UND Sports TV's 50th Episode

Much more than just a sports show

The University of North Dakota is celebrating the 50th episode of "UND Sports TV." Now in its second year, the weekly show is shot 100% on location. This broadcast television "without a net" approach is a big part of the show's popularity. And has been a very effective way to showcase the very best facilities the area has to offer from the Ralph Engelstad Arena to the Alerus Center and beyond. The 30-minute television show spotlights all UND Athletics, student organizations, and showcases UND Academic colleges and programs during the advertisement breaks.

UND Sports TV is a collaborative effort with the UND Marketing Group, UND Athletics, and the UND Alumni Association and Foundation. The weekly show has enjoyed the participation of UND and North Dakota's most recognizable figures, like Governor Jack Dalrymple, Grand Forks Mayor Mike Brown, UND President Robert Kelley, Minnesota Twins President Dave St. Peter, and former Minnesota Vikings star, Jim Kleinsasser, to name just a few.

"UND Athletics is very proud to partner with the UND Marketing Group staff in producing UNDSports.TV to provide exposure for the University and for the Athletic Department not only on television but also on the web to serve our fans all around the world," UND Associate Athletic Director, Kyle Doperalski said of the milestone. "The quality content provided by UNDSports.TV is valuable to our hungry fan base and fun for UND coaches and student-athletes to participate in."

The show is a regional fan favorite in the tri-state area (ND, SD, MN), an area central to UND's recruiting efforts. And online, exposure to the UND brand has grown from 4 countries on 2 continents to more than a hundred countries on 6 continents. The show's top clip, "ProTips with Danny Luetzen: Throwing the Perfect Spiral," is also the University's top viewed video of all-time in any genre (http://youtu.be/2vqOIfW_98Q). To equal the amount of time, UND fans around the globe have spent viewing this single clip, you would have to watch consecutively "24/7" for three months and two weeks.

"The UND Sports TV show provides our fans an inside look at student athletes and UND Athletics, beyond what most schools do," said Jayson Hajdu, Assistant Athletic Director. "This is especially true for our non-revenue sports who don't receive the same level of coverage as the majors; UND Sports TV gives great coverage to student athletes across all sports at UND, and we like that.'

The popularity of the show is due in large part to the "style" in which it is produced. The show aspires to take the viewer "inside," on a first-person journey into UND.

"There is much ado about the fact we produce this show with a very small crew on MacBook laptops," says Tim DeBolt, Director of the UND Marketing Group. "But the reality is this is a very large team effort with supportive partners all across the UND organization and would not be possible without them or our media partners at MidCo Sports Net."

"Together, we are leveraging the great power and popularity of UND sports programs," DeBolt said. "In the process bringing in new fans, strengthening alumni ties, and spotlighting many of the wonderful things the University of North Dakota and the Grand Cities have to offer."
