GRAND FORKS, N.D. - When the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) regular season came to an end last night, the Fighting Sioux men's hockey team secured the top spot in a number of individual and team statistical rankings. Senior forward and Hobey Baker Award candidate Matt Frattin (Edmonton, Alberta) won the WCHA scoring race with 40 points in 28 league games. Frattin entered the final weekend of the regular season trailing the scoring race by three points, but overtook Denver's Jason Zucker and Minnesota Duluth's Jack Connolly on the strength of a seven-point series at Michigan Tech. Frattin is UND's first WCHA scoring champion since Ryan Duncan in 2006-07, and his 40 points are the most by a Sioux during league play since Jeff Panzer (49) and Bryan Lundbohm (40) in 2000-01. Frattin also led the WCHA in goals with 22, becoming the first Sioux since Duncan, also in 2006-07, to lead the league in that category. Sophomore goalie Aaron Dell (Airdrie, Alberta) won the WCHA goaltending championship by posting a league-leading 1.97 goals against average in 25 league games (24 starts). Dell is UND's first WCHA goaltending champion since Jean-Philippe Lamoureux in 2007-08. Dell also led the WCHA in victories (19) and winning percentage (.812). It is the first time since Colorado College's Peter Sejna and Curtis McElhinney in 2002-03 that the league's scoring and goaltending leaders have come from the same team. The last UND duo to accomplish the feat was Jeff Panzer and Karl Goehring during UND's 1999-00 NCAA championship season. As a team, North Dakota topped the WCHA in goals (112), goals per game (4.00), fewest goals against (62), fewest goals against per game (2.21), power-play (23.3 percent), special teams net (+14), and goal differential (+50). Top-ranked North Dakota, the WCHA regular season champion, hosts Michigan Tech March 11-13 in the first round of the WCHA playoffs. The winner of the best-of-three series advances to the Red Baron WCHA Final Five in St. Paul.
